Thanksgiving meals offered in Irvington, Greenfield
Churches in Irvington and Greenfield will provide Thanksgiving meals to residents of their communities next week.
The dinner on Indianapolis’ Eastside, sponsored by Irvington-area churches, is a tradition dating back decades.
“I’ve been here 30 years, and I know it’s been here that long,” said Bridget Schlebecker, 53, a volunteer at the dinner and office administrator at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Schlebecker appreciates the diversity of those who gather to share a meal, she said. “You see old and young, and you see black and white,” she said. “It’s a great mix of humanity, and to me the most important impact is to see the people who have helping those who have not.”
The Irvington Community Thanksgiving Dinner happens at noon Nov. 26, which is Thanksgiving Day, at Our Lady of Lourdes School cafeteria, 30 S. Downey Ave. Organizers open doors to the cafeteria at 11 a.m.
Organizers charge $2 per meal — for those able to pay — to help cover expenses. The lunch features turkey, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, pies and other desserts. Entertainment and door prizes also are part of the day.
Residents are invited to make reservations to eat in, carry out or have meals delivered by calling Our Lady of Lourdes church at (317) 356-7291. Organizers ask you to call by Tuesday.
The fourth annual Hancock County Feast of Plenty is at from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the county’s 4-H Fairgrounds, 620 N. Apple St., Greenfield.
The free meal, provided by area churches, features turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls, traditional desserts, coffee, tea and lemonade.
Live music also is part of the program.
“What we’re trying to accomplish on this day is have everybody be part of our community family regardless of their circumstances,” said Ann Osborne, Greenfield, who has volunteered at the annual dinner since its inception. “It’s open to everyone.”
Transportation to the fairgrounds or food deliveries to homes are available. Call (317) 335-7590 for more information.
