A Lawrence man is facing battery and animal cruelty charges today for hitting his roommate and killing her dog.

David G. Mendenhall, 54, was arrested Sunday after Lawrence police responded to a domestic a disturbance call in the 4500 block of Dunn Street.

Marialina Renner, 48, told police she had been arguing with Mendenhall when he punched her in the left eye. Mendenhall then took Renner’s dog, a brown and white pit bull named Delilah, in the back yard and stabbed it in the chest with a hunting knife, according to Lawrence police report.

Renner said Mendenhall got upset when Delilah intervened on her behalf during the quarrel, police reported.

The dog got between the two and bit Mendenhall on the hand, according to the report. When police arrived Mendenhall was spraying a hose over the dog’s blood on a back step.

The responding police officers said they had visited the house before and found the dog to passive and friendly.

Mendhall was preliminarily charged with battery and torturing or killing a vertebrae animal.

You all should remember that a person should be given the freedom to tell their side of a story before everyone convicts the accused! None of you know what really happened. And, the “truth of the matter” is that SHE BEATS ON HIM TOO! You have no idea how many black eyes he has had from her! She’s an alcoholic that has turned on me and other people, too. She trained that dog to attack him. She is one of the reasons why pit bulls get a bad name and why that dog is now dead as well. David was defending himself from a vicious attack directed by her. I don’t believe in hurting animals, I also don’t believe in training them to attack. Heaven forbid that dog attacking a child because of what Maria trained it to do!! You really have no idea what your all talking about so you need to just clamp it up.
