Woodfire Grill (5020 Cambridge Way, Plainfield, IN)
    5

Keep on driving…that would be my recommendation. The place did not strike me as clean or organized. For the prices they charged it would have been nice to have an actual waiter/waitress instead of ordering at the front. The food came out quickly and that was the last time I saw an employee until we left. The food was fine, but nothing spectacular. In comparison, Famous Dave’s served similar style food but was better across the board.

Fogo de Chao (117 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN)

I went with the family recently and the evening was wonderful. I was pleasantly lulled into a meat-induced coma of which I can only dream about until my next visit. The service was amazing and the atmosphere was relaxed yet upscale. The main dilemma for my next visit will be whether or not to skip the salad bar before sampling the numerous offerings of meat. Normally I wouldn’t even have to think about brushing off the salad bar, but they do it differntly at FdC. My favorite were the fresh olives and some kind of pickled pepper that was fairly sweet and a little spicy. Don’t pass up the house specialy drink, which has a name I can neither remember nor pronounce.

Dog House Sports Bar (18 Whittington Drive, Brownsburg, IN)
    1

There are a few things anyone planning a trip to the Doghouse should know. First, it’s connected to a bowling alley. You decide whether that’s a good thing or not. Second, they have live music every Friday and Saturday. The cover is usually only a few bucks and the bands aren’t always great but are rarely horrible. Drink prices are very reasonable. They have plenty of pool tables, big screens and arcade games if you don’t want to rock with the band. There’s also an area with leather couches to relax in if you want something a little more intimate. The regular customers can be a little unfriendly, but no more so than usual small town bars. Overall, more fun than you would expect.

Harrison Center for the Arts (1505 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis, IN)
    1

This is a wonderful venue for arts in the city. They do a great job of giving artists a chance to showcase their talents. It seems like they always have something cool going on, so check the event calendar often.

Indianapolis City Market (222 E. Market St., Indianapolis, IN)
    1

I can remember visiting the City Market in elementary school. Much has changed, while much has stayed the same. From the outside, it’s the same but recent renovations have made the inside much brighter and inviting. They seem to be adding new vendors all the time and the diversity of offerings is great. If you get a chance, check out Olivia’s Cafe for great sandwiches.

La Piedad Mexican Restaurant (6524 Cornell Ave., Indianapolis, IN)
    12

The patio at La Piedad is yet another great place to grab a meal and people watch in Broad Ripple. It’s a little further from the heart of things, but the quieter north end location offers a nice change of pace. The food is what you would expect and the prices are very reasonable. The beer prices could be a little more in line with other Mexican restaurants, but that’s a minor fault. I absolutely look forward to eating there at least once a year when I stumble back from the Microbrew fest at Optipark.

Iaria's Italian Restaurant (317 S. College Ave., Indianapolis, IN)
    7

My family went there for years, but lately it’s not the same. I think there have been some family squabbles and changes in ownership to blame. I like the laid back, unpretentious atmosphere, but the food has gone downhill. The blue cheese dressing was top notch back in the day.

Scotty's Brewhouse (1 Virginia Avenue, Indianapolis, IN)
    5

I’m psyched to see this opening downtown. With the disappearance of BW3’s downtown, I needed another default sports bar. They serve up some great food in an enjoyable atmosphere. This place can’t open soon enough. I heard the rumors, but wasn’t sure this was a done deal. Hopefully it doesn’t fall through.

Howl at the Moon (20 E. Georgia St., Indianapolis, IN)
    4

I wouldn’t want to go every night, but the occasional trip to Howl at the Moon can be very fun. The crowd tends to be in a better mood than most bars and it’s definitely a nice break from the freak-show-dance-fest that places like Tiki Bob’s and Have a Nice Day offer. Bachelorette parties abound, so be prepared. Overall it’s a fun place to let loose and sing your heart out.

Wild Beaver Saloon (20 E. Maryland St., Indianapolis, IN)
    3

There are lots of bars that try to emulate the whole Coyote Ugly scene. Unfortunately, that tends to attract way more dudes than women. The downtown location of the Wild Beaver is pretty small. The atmosphere is fun and different from most other downtown bars. Guys, if you are looking to pick up a girl you would have better luck at Howl at the Moon.

Fountain Diner (1105 Shelby Street, Indianapolis, IN)
    3

I kind of wish I had read the above review before going there. I’m pretty sure no one bled in a milkshake while I was there, but you never know. The atmosphere is classic diner with the addition of a few out of place pool tables. I haven’t been at night, so they may seem more appropriate then, but during lunch they seemed odd. It’s a good location to see pretty much all of fountain square. Too bad they don’t have more sidewalk seating (needed everywhere in Fountain Square).

Buffalo Wild Wings (6135 W. 25th St., Speedway, IN)
    4

This location isn’t the nicest BW3’s location in town, but they hold their own. If you want plenty of TV’s, great wings, and daily beer specials you won’t be disappointed. I heard something about a BW3’s going in next to the Marsh on Crawfordsville, so I’m not sure if this location will be moving soon or they’ve decided to put BW3’s across the street from each other. I’ll try to update when availabe.

Chumley's Bar and Grill (838 Broad Ripple Ave., Indianapolis, IN)
    7

On the weekends this place is packed. That’s great if you can get a seat at the bar, otherwise you will spend your whole night trying to get a drink. It can be a nice place to catch a game or grab a bite to eat. To the idiots that insist on playing pool on Friday or Saturday, go somewhere else. People really don’t like moving every 30 seconds becuase you think you’re some kind of pool hustler. If a bar could have its own wardrobe this one would be decked out in khaki cargo shorts, flip-flops and a backwards ball cap.

Ruth's Chris Steak House (45 S. Illinois St., Indianapolis, IN)
    4

It’s an upscale chain steakhouse. I would recommend St. Elmo’s or Mortons first, but everyone has their preference. There are just too many independent options downtown to try before resorting to the chains.

My Favorite Cigar & Bar (36 E. Main St., Brownsburg, IN)
    1

I wouldn’t call this place upscale. Maybe upscale compared to the Arby’s in Brownsburg. If you want to feel like you walked into a private party, then hang out at this place. I can almost guarantee that the owner will be sitting with her friends at the end barstool. The cigar selection used to be top notch, but they took out a walk in humidor and replaced it with some kind of lawn furniture crammed in a tiny room (very bad idea). The ventilation can be a problem, but only if you ever want to wear the same clothes again. In other words, it gets smoky. That’s to be expected from a cigar bar, but Nicky Blaines seems to do a better job in that regard. The do carry some hard to find beers and the staff is very friendly. The hold occasional events, but in the end this is a neighborhood bar that’s not really worth the drive.

8 Seconds Saloon and Tremors Club (111 N. Lynhurst Drive, Indianapolis, IN)
    3

I’ve been a couple times and I don’t think I’ll be going back. There’s nothing wrong with the place, it’s just not my style. If you are into line dancing and country music, you will love it. Or if you are into a strange hip-hop club inside of a country bar, then you’ll love tremors. Seems like fights are a bit of a problem between the clientele for the respective areas, but that’s to be expected. The host an annual amateur boxing contest between firefighters and cops that’s a lot of fun.

Bourbon Street Distillery (361 Indiana Ave., Indianapolis, IN)
    10

Good spot to sit outside and people watch. Inside is spacious, but laid out a little oddly. I’ve only been for drinks, so I can’t comment on the food. The area we had drinks had several couches and was kind of secluded, which was nice. Overall it was a very nice time. I can’t recall any drink specials though.

    Papa Joe's Junior Avon (8100 E. U.S. 36, Avon, IN)
    2

There isn’t a review area for Papa Joe’s Jr in Brownsburg, so I wanted to leave a review here. I’m glad it closed because the service was horrendous. I took guests from out of town and I swore I would never return. I can understand hiring high school age people to wait tables. I actually agree with the practice, especially small restaurants that want to encourage local clientele. However, hiring young servers does not exempt a restaurant from providing good service. Whether you are 16 or 66, you should have a basic understanding of how to take an order, fulfill the order and ensure guest comfort. The first time I went the service was awful and I wrote it off as a fluke. When it happened with another server the next time and the management didn’t seem to care, I stopped going. Apparently others shared my thoughts since it closed not long ago. I say good riddance and it serves you right.

Starbucks Coffee (1085 N. Green St., Brownsburg, IN)
    1

I rarely drink coffee or coffee related drinks, but when I need one there’s always a Starbucks nearby. This location runs an efficient drive thru, but lacks any other noteworthy features. The inside is exactly what you would expect and the outdoor seating are is small and very near a major intersection.

Club Venus (3535 W. 16th St., Indianapolis, IN)
    2

I went a while ago and it was scary. Granted, it was over lunch…but still. The dancer had to put a quarter in the jukebox before she hopped on stage. She also had an ace bandage on her knee. Neither one of those things made a good impression. Did I mention that she was old. If you have to get your gentleman’s club fix, just drive by this place and head up to 38th street.
